Mentoring for Writers & Artists

Tailored mentoring packages for writers, theatre makers, performance artists and artist-scholars seeking sustained creative and professional support.

All levels of experience supported.

Are you a writer wanting to build creative confidence? Or have you just finished the first draft of your novel and would like feedback and advice about next steps?

Are you a theatre maker or solo performer looking for sustained mentorship to develop your creative practice?

Are you an artist-scholar looking for guidance on your practice-based PhD programme?

I mentor writers, theatre and performance artists, graduate students and university faculty in the UK and internationally. For me, mentorship is a creative beside-ness: a relationship in which I champion, challenge and accompany you on your creative journey. My approach is attentive, rigorous and deeply supportive.

You might be considering a career pivot,  applying for a dedicated period of professional development, such as the Arts Council England DYCP (Developing Your Creative Practice) and want an expereinced mentor or perhaps you just want help to troubleshoot a specific creative roadblock.

I welcome the chance to support all writers, artists and artist-scholars at any stage of their practice.

I am keen to support members of the LGBTQ+ community, women-identified writers and artists, and older women writers and artists reclaiming and amplifying their voice in midlife.

As your mentor, I’m there on the days when you are full of ideas, and equally there on the days when you are not. I will help you show up for your work and yourself. I will challenge and champion you, help you keep going, clarify your direction and develop your work with renewed creative confidence.

I offer three different mentoring packages, listed below but which ever package you choose it will be tailored to your specific needs.

  • “Helen has such an interesting sensitivity to dramatic language within her work, both aesthetically and intentionally. Alongside this, her work is awe-inspiring. It has been an eye-opening experience to be mentored by her, and I believe it will help me grow both as an artist and a human being.”

  • “I have been working with Helen as a mentor as I move into novel-writing from writing for performance. The fact that Helen has made this pivot is invaluable: she really understands the shifts necessary, both in discipline and outlook. We set out ways of working at the beginning of the relationship. She reads my work deeply and analytically. Helen sets deadlines and offers helpful related readings; her notes are precise and her questions are insightful. Above all, she is hugely supportive — just the thing I, as a first-time novel writer, need to keep going through what can seem a mammoth undertaking.”

  • “Helen’s guidance and influence has been vital for my work. I was seeking support and advice from people who had stayed in the performance sector so successfully, and I turned to Helen with her diverse performance, writing and academic practice. The mentoring so far has been vital: she has alerted me to new texts, thinkers and ways of considering diverse possible outcomes for my project, and she has also been enormously generous and supportive in guiding me as I figure out how to make this a sustainable long-term career.”
