About the workshop
Smell is a potent catalyst for creativity. Whether you’re writing a novel, play or memoir, or journaling for pleasure, the senses are a powerful way to recall memory and generate text.
What is the first smell you remember?
What smell reminds you of home?
What smell makes you feel homesick?
Smell is a time traveller, takes us back into the past and lets us re-experience it vividly, unlocking memories, secrets, feelings and intensities. In this two-hour live Zoom workshop, be ready for secrets and surprises as, together, we mine sensory details and discover the compelling stories held within the scents that surround us.
I have published extensively on the connections between smell and memory, and on how working with olfaction can become an evocative creative tool for writers and artists. As part of this workshop, I will draw on my experience working with smell in theatre and live performance, as well as my research into olfaction and the relationship between smell, memory and emotion undertaken with scientists at the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bangalore, India.
This workshop is for writers and artists at any stage of their creative journey who are curious about working with smell as a catalyst for memory, atmosphere, character and story.
You will leave this workshop with…
a body of new writing and creative material
a range of generative tools in your back pocket for working with smell and memory
an awareness of the richness of your sensorial palette and ways to access it
a deeper sense of creative confidence and awareness of your creative process
tutor feedback on your writing
